The Toyota Yaris is emblematic of the subcompact car, having been designed according to minimalist principles that allow it to securely and comfortably carry 5 passengers in its small frame. Essentially the same car as the Vitz which was first released to much fanfare domestically in 1999, winning the Japan Car of the Year 1999-2000, the Yaris was offered to overseas markets in the same year under this new name.
The Yaris is available as a hatchback, coupe, or sedan, and has one of either a series 3 cylinder 1L, series 4 cylinder 1.3L or 1.5L VVT-i engine, capable of producing 71, 87 and 110 hp respectively. The Yaris uses a FF layout and CVT as standard, with the 1.3L model available in 4 speed AT 4WD, and, depending on the year and model, is able to achieve fuel efficiencies of 16.6 to 25 km/l (with the recent hybrid models reaching up to 34.3 km/l). As safety features, all models of the Yaris come complete with dual airbags, ABS with EBD that creates firm braking, brake assist, and seat belts with pretensioner and force limiter.
