The first generation Highlander, a popular SUV, was unique because it was based on a modified Camry platform instead of a traditional truck platform like most SUVs at the time. 1st Generation XU20 (2000-2007)

2nd Generation XU40 (2007-2013)
The second generation Highlander grew in dimensions over the previous, coming in almost 10 cm longer, 8.4 cm wider, and 2.5 cm more ground clearance. Inside, there was more room in the first row of seats, more legroom for the second and third rows, and a higher hip point for more comfortable seating. The second row's middle seat could be stowed away for more seating and storage options.
Engines of the second-generation Highlander included a 2.7L inline four-cylinder engine and a new 3.5L V6 six-cylinder engine that produced 270 horsepower. The hybrid version was available with either a 3.3L or a 3.5L V6 six-cylinder engine.
3rd Generation XU50 (2013-2019)
In 2013, Toyota revealed its larger but more sleek Highlander. While it was longer and wider than its predecessor, it was more streamlined thanks to a lower roof line. The third-generation Highlander was also able to seat up to eight passengers and got a sliding second-row point of entry that gave it 11 cm more width.
The available engines for the vehicle were a gasoline 2.7L inline four-cylinder, a 3.5L V6 six-cylinder, and a 3.5L V6 six-cylinder for the hybrid model. The diverse engine options provided a range of power and efficiency choices for potential drivers.
4th Generation XU70 (2019-present)
For its fourth and most recent generation, the Highlander came built on Toyota's Global Architecture-K platform, allowing for a lightweight and highly rigid body shell, lower center of gravity, and better handling. In addition to the length and width, the cargo room behind the third row of seats was also increased to 456L. A 12.3-inch touchscreen was also added.
The hybrid Highlander got a new powertrain comprising a 2.5L inline four-cylinder paired to an electric motor for 243 hp. Gasoline Highlanders received a 2.0L S20A-FTS turbocharged inline four-cylinder, a 2.4L T24A-FTS turbocharged inline four-cylinder, 2.5L inline four-cylinders for China versions, and a 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 six-cylinder.
Engine Performance & Technology
The engines used in the Toyota Highlander are reliable and efficient. Fourth-generation Highlanders are fitted with Dynamic Force engines developed under the Toyota New Global Architecture strategy.
