TOYOTA HARRIER

Luxurious yet simple, robust yet elegant--Toyota's Harrier strikes the perfect balance for what it means to be a luxury SUV. Launched in 1997, the Harrier began its life as a five-passenger compact and eventually evolved into a mid-sized crossover. For the overseas market from 1998 to 2008, it has been rebadged as the Lexus RX. The Harrier's production run of more than two decades (and counting) has brought along many design and technological advancements, but what has remained constant is that for each of its iterations, it has come in a sleek package, makes use of high-quality materials, is comfortable for both drivers and passengers alike, and can be depended upon to deliver exceptional performance. Keep reading to learn more about this luxury SUV from Toyota.

Origin

Toyota designed the Harrier as a combination of the luxury sedan and the SUV, basing it on the sixth-generation Camry. Its platform was a reinforced and raised version of the Camry's with a higher ground clearance to tackle off-road conditions better. It was rebadged as the Lexus RX for export and as capable competition to Mercedes-Benz's ML-Class and BMW's X5.

1st Generation (XU10; 1997-2002)

Launched in 1997, the XU10 Harrier caught the attention of Japanese drivers for its handsome design, which used sharp lines. If the exterior drew in the crowd, the interior of the Harrier kept them in. Its cabin is comfortable, spacious, and practical, featuring walk-through access behind the front seats and standard features like air-conditioning, CD player, and power windows.

The XU10 Harrier comes with a choice of three gasoline engines -- the 2.2L inline four-cylinder 5S-FE, its replacement, the 2.4L inline four-cylinder 2AZ-FE, and the 3.0L V6 six-cylinder 1MZ-FE. These are mated to a four-speed automatic transmission with Steermatic shift buttons on the steering wheel.

2nd Generation (XU30; 2003-2012)

Toyota made the Harrier sleeker for its second generation, the XU30. The new design and a redesigned front grille helped give it a more modern look. The inside continues and even builds upon the tradition of comfort and practicality with high-quality materials and a layout that provides ample room for passengers and cargo. Besides the essentials like power windows, air conditioning, and a sound system, its dashboard features a central display screen for multimedia and navigation functions.

Engine choices for the XU30 are two gasoline vehicles for the domestic Japanese market -- either the 2.4L inline four-cylinder 2AZ-FE or 3.0L V6 six-cylinder 1MZ-FE with or without all-wheel drive and mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. However, other engines like the 3.3L V6 six-cylinder 3MZ-FE are available for the Lexus versions overseas and in the hybrid Harrier introduced in 2004.

3rd Generation (XU60; 2013-2019)

Released in 2013, the third generation Harrier, the XU60, was out to make a statement. It exuded a touch of masculinity thanks to a new front grille that was all but completely covered on the upper side, angular headlights that sharply tapered off at the corners, and a rear spoiler at the upper side of its tailgate. Inside, its spacious and comfortable cabin was clad with leather. Toyota equipped the XU60 with advanced technological features like a touchscreen infotainment system with intuitive controls for navigation, multimedia, and connectivity functions.

The third generation is available in three different variations:
1. A 2.0L inline four-cylinder 3ZR-FAE that is paired with a CVT.
2. A turbo model that comes with a 2.0L turbocharged 8AR-FTS engine paired with a six-speed automatic.
3. The hybrid version equipped with a 2.5L inline four-cylinder 2A-FXE and coupled with an e-CVT.

4th Generation (XU80; 2020-present)

The latest (as of the date of writing) Harrier is returning to its roots as a sleek machine. Unveiled in 2020, it was built on Toyota's GA-K New Global Architecture Platform. It features a wider wheelbase and lower profile than the third generation, making for a cleaner and more aerodynamic appearance. Toyota's efforts to create a comfortable, spacious, and luxurious cabin for the XU80 require no introductions but need reiterating. The XU80 uses high-quality materials, including premium upholstery and soft-touch surfaces. Advanced features in the XU80 that make the drive much smoother include a high-res touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration, voice recognition, and navigation.

Engines available for the XU80 are the petrol 2.0L inline four-cylinder M20A-FKS mated to a CVT, and the 2.5L A25A-FXS inline four-cylinder mated to an e-CVT in the petrol hybrid and petrol plug-in hybrid Harriers.
