TOYOTA LAND CRUISER

The Toyota Land Cruiser is the legendary series of rugged four-wheel-drive vehicles from the Japanese manufacturer that proves that ruggedness and refinement can come in the same package. Land Cruisers are powerful, reliable, luxurious (in the Station Wagon version), and comfortable, so that every drive in them, no matter the terrain or distance, is a breeze. Origin

Early versions of the Land Cruiser, such as a light reconnaissance car and a light truck, were designed for use by the Japanese army in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Toyota then introduced a compact cargo truck prototype known as the Model AK, which then saw production as the AK10; the AK10 was powered by a 2.2L engine mated to a three-speed manual transmission and was later renamed "Land Cruiser" in the 1950s.

Toyota divided the Land Cruiser into three series: the basic Heavy Duty Series, the Station Wagon Series with an emphasis on comfort, and the Light Duty Series (which won't be covered here).

Heavy Duty Series

BJ/FJ Series (1951-1954)

The Land Cruiser BJ/FJ, which was initially known as the Toyota Jeep BJ/FJ, was a two-door soft top light military vehicle that was also the official patrol car of the national police agency. Engines were 3.4L or 3.9L inline six-cylinders mated to a four-speed manual transmission.

J20 Series (1955-1959)

The J20 Series retained the same engines as the previous generation but came in a wider range of bodies: two-door soft top, 2-door hardtop, 2-door pickup truck, and five-door station wagon. The Land Cruiser also began to be exported overseas.

J40 Series (1960-1983)

Worldwide, the Land Cruiser earned a reputation as a reliable cross-country vehicle. Body styles included soft-top, 2- and 4-door vans, a pickup, and a fire engine, while engines were 3.9 and 4.2L inline six-cylinder gasoline and 3.0L to 4.0L diesel.

J70 Series (1984-present)

The J70 was launched in 1984 as the successor of the J40 series. It bore a resemblance to the J40 series but came with a curved windshield. Though meant as a commercial vehicle, the J70 was comfortable enough even for transporting passengers. More wheelbase options ranging from 2,310 mm to 3,180 mm were added to meet a wider range of consumer demands.

While production of the J70 came to an end in Japan in 2004, the Land Cruiser was still sold and thrived overseas. 2007 saw the front end of the J70 grow in size. This was to accommodate a new V8 turbo diesel engine. A double cab pickup was added to the lineup, and the Land Cruiser eventually made its reappearance back in Japan in 2014.

Station Wagon Series

J50 Series (1957-1979)

The J50 series was initially launched as a van but was comfortable enough and marketed overseas as a passenger vehicle. There was a choice of either a bottom-hinged door or out-swinging double doors at the rear. Engines were either a 3.9L or 4.2L six-cylinder gasoline.

J60 Series (1980-1989)

The J60 was a four-door wagon that, while still rugged, was given more passenger-centric features like air-conditioning, rear heating, and a revamped interior. It could seat from 5 to 8 and came with 4.0L and 4.2L gasolines, a 3.4L and 4.0L diesel, and a 4.0L turbo diesel.

J80 Series (1990-1997)

Launched in the 1990s, the J80 initially came with swing-out back doors, which were replaced by a tailgate. Equipment in the J80 series was upgraded to rival luxury SUVs and included cloth upholstery, standard air conditioning, and a power driver seat. Engines were 4.0L and 4.5L inline six-cylinder petrol and 4.2L inline six-cylinder diesel and turbo diesel.

J100 Series (1998-2006)

The J100 grew in size, got an improved suspension, and came with a rich list of features, even in standard models, further cementing its status as a luxury 4WD. It received a newly designed 4.6L V8 gasoline.

J200 Series (2007-2020)

The Land Cruiser again grew in size for the J200 and got upgrades like smart entry, smart start, and a 4-zone climate control on certain models. Among other improvements were the introduction of the CRAWL 4WD control system and the Kinematic Dynamic Suspension system.

J300 Series (2021-present)

The J300 was built on the GA-F platform, which reduced its weight by almost 200 kg. The V8 engine was pulled from the J300, leaving a 3.4L twin-turbo, a 4.0L V6, and a 3.3L twin-turbo V6.

Engine Performance & Technology

Land Cruiser engines are reliable and efficient. Newer Land Cruisers, such as the 2021, utilize Dynamic force engines, which feature an improved cylinder head and intake port design alongside other improvements that give a "direct feeling, smooth and pleasant acceleration performance," and better fuel consumption.

In addition, some of their engines incorporate Toyota's engine technologies, such as Dual VVT-I (intelligent variable valve timing) and Valvematic, to achieve better fuel consumption.

Safety & Reliability

Like all Toyotas, the Land Cruiser is safe and reliable. The list of standard equipment differs by generation, but you can expect safety features to be up-to-date or even advanced for their respective eras. Airbags, seat belts with pretensioners, EBD, and ABS can come as standard for AWD models. Downhill Assist Control arrives as standard. Newer Land Cruisers can come from Toyota's Safety Sense suite of technologies, such as Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam, and Pre-crash safety system that make use of laser radars and cameras.

Trim Configurations
