Released in 1984 and receiving the Car of the Year Japan award the same year, the MR2 is Toyota's two-seater midship coupe and Japan's first car to have the engine installed in its middle. The MR2 is designed to be economical and sporty, receiving simple elements like fully-independent MacPherson strut front and rear suspensions and four-wheel disc brakes.
For its first generation, the MR2 comes with three engine options: 1.5L inline four-cylinder, 1.6L DOHC inline four-cylinder for 118 hp, and 1.6L supercharged inline four-cylinder for 145 hp.
The launch of the 1989 MR2 marks the beginning of the second generation of this highly raved vehicle. On its exterior, the second generation MR2 gets white clearance lamps and front turn signals to further complement its sporty look. Also, this generation receives an increase in body dimensions and engine displacement, getting a 2.0L inline four-cylinder DOHC for 163 hp and a ceramic turbo version of the same engine for 222 hp. These are mated to either a 4AT or 5MT (turbo only) with fuel efficiency ranging from 9.6 to 11.6 km/l.
