TOYOTA VITZ

Even small families need a car that can keep up with their hectic lifestyles. The Toyota Vitz subcompact car has been popular among many young couples for not just all the benefits of a small car, like maneuverability and fuel savings, but also for its versatility and surprisingly large amounts of space (for its size). It goes without saying that Toyota's engineering know-how that has gone into the Vitz's design has produced a vehicle that's inherently reliable. Are you interested in learning more about Vitz? Origin

The Vitz was designed from the bottom up as the subcompact for the new century, featuring a sleek and innovative design. It was first released in Europe in 1998 under the Yaris nameplate, and after that, in 1999, it debuted in Japan as the Vitz.

1st Generation (XP10/XP20; 1999-2004)

Upon its introduction in Japan in 1999, the XP10 Vitz won the Car of the Year Japan award. Its initial release consisted of three- and five-door hatchbacks that could comfortably seat up to five passengers and have enough cargo space for their items, thanks in part to its high ceiling. The standard front-wheel-drive models were powered by a 1.0L1SZ-FE inline four-cylinder. A four-wheel-drive model was made available later in 1999, and it was powered by a 1.3L inline four-cylinder.

In addition to the standard engine, which is a 1.3L inline four-cylinder unit, this model offers a variety of other engine options to choose from. These include a 1.4L turbodiesel, which is ideal for drivers who prioritize fuel efficiency, as well as 1.5L and 1.5L turbocharged inline four-cylinder units that offer a balance of power and efficiency.

2nd Generation (XP90; 2005-2010)

Externally, the second-generation Vitz bore a significant resemblance to its predecessor. However, the evolution had largely taken place on the inside. The platform on which the Vitz was built was refreshed, improving its collision safety performance, while the enlarged body made for a more spacious cabin and cargo-carrying capacity. Functionality was improved even further with the addition of a greater number of seating arrangements and storage options.

The XP90's engine options include the well-known 1.0L1KR-FE inline three-cylinder, three 1.3Ls, two 1.5Ls, a 1.6L, and a 1.8L inline four-cylinder petrol, as well as a 1.4L inline four-cylinder turbodiesel. Transmissions include a CVT, five-speed manual, six-speed manual (for diesel), and four-speed automatic for 4WD.

3rd Generation (XP130; 2010-2019)

Being "family-friendly" doesn't always have to come at the sacrifice of good looks. The third generation XP130 Vitz featured a more aggressive look with a tapered front that reduced its drag coefficient and, in turn, its fuel efficiency. If the XP130 looked any longer, it wasn't just an illusion created by a leaner profile; the wheelbase and length were extended by 50mm and 130mm, making for even more space in the rear cabin and boot. While the XP130 only came as a five-door hatchback, a hybrid model was added to the lineup. In 2014, a facelift brought along improvements to ride comfort and sound reduction at high speeds.

The third generation's petrol engines included a 1.0L inline three-cylinder, three 1.3L inline four-cylinders, two 1.5L inline four-cylinders, a 1.5L inline four-cylinder hybrid, a 1.5L inline four-cylinder turbo, and a 1.8L inline four-cylinder. A 1.4L turbodiesel inline four-cylinder was also available. The transmission lineup consisted of five- and six-speed manuals, a four-speed automatic, a CVT, and an e-CVT for the hybrid.

Engine Performance & Technology

As one can expect from a Toyota, the engines used in the Toyota Vitz are dependable and incorporate many of Toyota's latest technologies (for their time) to deliver exceptional power and fuel efficiency. One standout performer is the legendary 1.0L 1KR-FE found in the second and third generation that has won "Engine of the Year" in its category in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. The reduced-friction, highly thermal efficient 1KR-FE has enabled the Vitz models to achieve 23.0km/l. Another highlight is the 1NR-FE inline four-cylinder engine that features Stop and Start technology, which automatically shuts down and restarts the internal combustion engine to reduce time spent in idle and allow it to offer fuel economy of up to 24.0 km/l.

Safety & Reliability

The Vitz is well protected by a rich suite of safety features. The list of standard equipment differs by generation, but you can expect safety features to be up-to-date or even advanced for their respective eras. In the third generation, the list of safety equipment includes up to nine airbags: driver and front passenger airbags, front-seat-mounted side airbags, a knee airbag for the driver, first and second-row side-curtain airbags, and two front-seat cushion airbags. Some models can come from Toyota's Safety Sense C collision avoidance package of technologies such as Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam, and Pre-crash safety system that make use of laser radars and cameras.

Trim Configurations

Trims for the Vitz vary by region, but in Japan, the first generation comprises the U, U Intelligent, U L Neo Edition, and Clavia. The second generation is made up of the B, F, F Limited, the F Chambre A Paris Collection, and U, while the third generation features the F, F M, Jewela, U, RS, and G. The Smart-Stop Package, which adds Toyota's Stop and Start idling-stop system, is available in certain trims.
