MERCEDES-BENZ A-CLASS

Mercedes-Benz's A Class is luxury in a compact and sporty package. It is their first compact and entry-level vehicle, which comes as a 3-door (2004-2012) and 5-door hatchback, and from 2018 onwards, as a sedan. Earlier versions of the A Class are smaller superminis, but with each successive generation, the A Class has grown in size, offering more practicality. Origin

Touted by Mercedes-Benz as a shorter-than-average supermini but with the space and practicality of a large family car, the A Class, Benz's first compact car, was launched at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was a supermini 5-door hatchback that featured a front-wheel drive layout and a tall body for its size.

First Generation (W168; 1997–2003)

The first generation of the A Class was a drastically different direction for the German luxury brand. Not only was it their first compact car in the form of a five-door supermini hatchback, but it was also equipped with a front-engine, front-wheel drive layout versus the classic rear-wheel drive one. The body of this maiden generation resembled an MPV and housed the trunk and cabin in one compartment. Inside, the A Class was just as Mercedes-Benz had marketed, featuring enough space to seat five adult passengers. A facelift in 2001 revised the A Class to be able to pass the elk avoidance test. It brought along a longer wheelbase version, clear headlights, and other features like window bags, as well as improved electronic stability control with hydraulic brake assist. Engines were 1.4 L, 1.6 L, 1.9 L, and 2.1 L inline four-cylinders, and a diesel 1.7 L inline four-cylinder.

Second Generation (W169; 2004–2011)

One of the key features of the second generation of A Class was its unique sandwich floor construction that not only gave it a lower centre of gravity for better safety and handling in spite of its tall body, but also provided a higher driving position for a better view of the road and better protection from side impacts. Just like the first generation, the second generation had a spacious interior, belying its appearance, and one that was even roomier and more luxurious compared to its predecessor. Features included an advanced infotainment system, manual or automatic climate control, and heated front seats. Standard safety features included electronic stability control and an array of airbags. Despite its small size, the second-generation A Class was practical, featuring rear seat backrests that could be folded downwards, and rear seats that could be folded forward to create more room in the luggage area. Engines were 1.5 L, 1.7 L, 2.0 L, and 2.0 L turbo inline four-cylinder petrols, and a 2.0 L inline four-cylinder diesel.

Third Generation (W176; 2012–2017)

The third generation was more of a hatchback than the previous two generations, and it was engineered with the help of front-wheel drive hatchback experts, such as Renault. It came with a sporty appearance thanks to a new front fascia with swept-back headlights, and a tilted forward tailgate that could come with a rear spoiler. The interior was comfortable and practical—at the front were bucket seats, and at the rear, a split-folding bench that could make even more space for the trunk. Sportiness carried on in the speedometer and tachometer with large dials. The W176 A Class boasted standard features like Nappa leather trim on the steering wheel, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Mirrorlink, and advanced safety features such as their Pre-Safe crash avoidance system on some trims. Engines were 1.6 L and 2.0 L inline four-cylinder petrol turbos, and 1.5 L, 1.8 L, and 2.2 L inline four-cylinder turbo diesels.

Fourth Generation (W177; 2018–present)

The A Class lineup now features a sedan for its fourth generation, and comes with a wider-looking rear end for an even sportier exterior. The extensive list of equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, keyless ignition, LED daytime running lights, and two 7-inch displays, one of which is for the new voice-activated Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system. Some of the available options were Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ambient lighting, and smartphone locking and unlocking. Engines are 1.3 L and 2.0 L inline four-cylinder petrol turbos, 1.5 L and 2.0 L inline four-cylinder turbo diesels, and a 1.3 L turbo petrol plug-in hybrid.

Engine Performance & Technology

Some of the A Class's engines are labelled with "BlueEfficiency," Benz's trademark for their most eco-friendly and fuel-efficient cars that feature a suite of fuel-saving and pollutant-reducing modifications. These engines have been incorporated with CGI technologies to optimize fuel consumption.

The AMG high-performance A Class models use either modified Mercedes-Benz engines or those developed independently in the AMG models.

Safety & Reliability
