2017 MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS

Origin
The E-Class officially began in 1993, although its roots can be traced to Mercedes's first modern midsize, the W120, produced in 1953. Over the next few decades, Mercedes's midsize would be redesigned as the W110 in 1961, the W114/115 in 1968, the W123 in 1975, and the W124 in 1984, by which time it was also offered in coupe, estate, and convertible body styles. In 1993, the W124 received a facelift coupled with a new nameplate - the "E-Class."
1st Generation (W124, 1993-1994)
With a facelift that included a remodeled front fascia with flared wheel arches and an extended rear bumper, the W124 began life as Mercedes Benz's E-Class. This first generation was offered as a saloon, coupe, convertible, or 5- or 7-seater estate and boasted many (then) luxurious features such as automatic climate control, an electrically adjustable right-side mirror, dual airbags, and an advanced sound system.
Petrol engines were 2.0 to 2.3L inline four-cylinders, 2.6L to 3.6L inline six-cylinders, and 4.2L to 6.0L V8 eight-cylinders. Diesels were a 2.0L inline four-cylinder, 2 2.5L inline five-cylinders, and 2 3.0L inline six-cylinders. This generation also introduced the 4 Matic all-wheel-drive system and multi-link independent rear suspension.
2nd Generation (W210, 1995-2001)
The second generation E-Class took a sharp turn toward bio-design. It did away with the boxiness of the previous generation in favor of more organic shapes that were still supported with ample straights. At the front, its predecessor's rectangular headlights were replaced with a double elliptical headlight design. Similar changes continued into the cabin, including placing a curved visor on the instrument panel. For the first time, a V6 six-cylinder engine was offered to replace the inline six-cylinder.
Petrol engines were inline-fours, inline-sixes, V6 six-cylinders, and V8 eight-cylinders, ranging in displacements from 2.0L to 6.3L. Diesels were inline-fours, inline-fives, and inline-sixes between 2.0L and 3.2L.
3rd Generation (W211, 2002-2008)
The flowing design of the second generation E-Class was pushed even further in the exterior of the third generation W211. Luxury features were also elevated, as inside the deep armrest of the E W211 E-Class housed a refrigerated compartment, while dual-zone climate control came as standard. These came alongside passive and active safety systems, bi-xenon headlights, automatic air conditioning, and rain-sensing wipers.
The wide range of engines included 1.8L to 6.2L inline four-cylinder, V6 six-cylinder, and V8 eight-cylinder petrols, a 1.8L inline four-cylinder CNG, and 2.2L to 4.0L inline four-cylinder, inline five-cylinder, V6 six-cylinder, inline six-cylinder, and V8 eight-cylinder diesels.
4th Generation (W212/C207/A207, 2009-2015)
The fourth generation W212 E-Class evolved into a more masculine, yet no less refined, machine. Its double elliptical headlights made way for dissimilar double trapezoidal ones, and its sides bulged with new rear quarter panels. However, a 2012 update replaced the front fenders, doors, and rear quarter panels for a more wavy styling. Body styles were either a 4-door sedan or a 5-door estate.
Engines for the W212 were 1.8L to 6.2L inline four-cylinder, V6 six-cylinder, and V8 eight-cylinder petrols, and either a 2.1L inline four-cylinder or a 3.0L V6 six-cylinder turbo diesel.
5th Generation (W213, 2016-2022)
With the fifth generation W213, Mercedes Benz based its design on its F800-style concept car. The headlights were shrunk and became its main styling feature. Its front bumper and iconic Benz grille also became more aggressive yet controlled. Two 12.3-inch full HD screens housed within a single unit were available. This generation of the E-Class was also capable of semi-automated driving and got advanced safety features like Active Brake Assist and Evasive Steering Assist.
Petrol engines were turbo/twin-turbo inline four-cylinder, inline six-cylinders, V6 six-cylinders, and V8 eight-cylinders ranging between 1.5L and 4.0L, and inline four-cylinder, V6 six-cylinder, and inline six-cylinder turbo diesel between 1.6L and 3.0L. This generation also featured hybrids that used 2.0L and 3.0L hybrid petrols.
6th Generation (W214, 2023-present)
The sixth generation has a black high-gloss insert between the headlights and grille. Three body styles are available - the sedan, estate, and all-terrain estate. This generation is also the first Mercedes Benz to receive the setup of three screens known as the MBUX superscreen, which pairs dual 310 mm screens with a 450 mm screen to form a large screen.
Currently, the W214 is available exclusively in mild hybrid and plug-in variants that use inline four-cylinder petrol/diesel. A 3.0L inline six-cylinder is only available with the top-of-the-range E450.
Engine Performance & Technology
Specific Benz engines are labeled with "BlueEFFICIENCY," Benz's trademark for their most eco-friendly and fuel-efficient cars that feature a suite of fuel-saving and pollutant-reducing modifications. These engines have been incorporated with CGI technologies to optimize fuel consumption.
The high-performance branch of Mercedes-Benz, AMG, uses either modified Mercedes-Benz engines or those developed independently in the AMG models. One of the most iconic AMG engines is the roaring 6.2L V8 eight-cylinder Mercedes-AMG M156, found in E-Class AMGs between 2006 and 2011 and capable of over 600 horsepower.
Safety & Reliability
Driving is as safe as it can be in the E-Class. Besides all the standard equipment, advanced safety technologies such as driver drowsiness detection, lane departure warning, and traffic sign recognition, as well as other advanced driver assistance systems like park assist and active brake assist features, are available on the later versions of the E-Class.
Trim Configurations
Besides the "standard" sedan and estate wagons, the E-Class also comes in head-turning two-door coupe and cabriolet variants powered by a wide range of engines, including AMG units.
