MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS

Luxury knows no limits in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The S-Class is the luxury car brand's flagship series of full-sized sedans, coupes, and limousines. It has debuted many of Benz's latest technologies and features and continuously sets higher bars for luxury vehicles and automotive engineering. Origin

Since 1951, the roots of the S-Class can be traced to predecessor models such as the 1954 W180 Ponton, which featured a six-cylinder sedan, coupé, and convertible models; its successor, the 1959 Fintail; and finally, the 1965 W108. The W108 was offered in short- and long-wheelbase models and featured 4.5L and 6.3L engines.

First Generation (W116; 1972-1978)

The W116, released in 1972, was the first Benz to be officially given the S-Class nameplate. Although handsome, it was clear that Mercedes-Benz placed a heavy emphasis on safety. The fuel tank of the W116 was placed over the rear axle to provide protection in the event of a collision, while the inside featured padded door trim around the window and a heavily padded steering wheel. It was also one of the first cars to come with ABS as an option.

Second Generation (W126/C126; 1979-1990)

The W126 was the first Benz to come with plastic bumpers integrated into its auto parts. Once again, safety equipment and comfort features were advanced for the time. The list included optional ABS and driver airbags, electronically adjustable front seats with memory positions, and automatic climate control.

Third Generation (W140/C140; 1991-1997)

The W140 commanded awe with its larger dimensions and fortress-like build. It featured double-pane window glazing, optional power-closing for doors and trunk, optional Linguatronic voice control, and optional Xenon headlamps with dynamic headlamp range control, among many other advanced features. Engines were 2.8 to 6.0L gasolines and 3.0L and 3.5L turbodiesels.

Fourth Generation (W220; 1998-2004)

The fourth generation was significantly longer and sleeker than the third, featuring more flowing and curved lines. There was plenty of room on the inside, and even more so in the longer wheelbase model with optional rear footrests. Other luxuries included power windows, mirrors, seats, and sunroof. The wide range of engine choices included a 2.8L V6 and a massive 6.0L V12.

Fifth Generation (W221; 2005-2012)

The fifth generation came with smoother lines and a more modest front end. But its large size and ideal proportions still gave it a grand appearance. The interior was fitted with luxurious materials such as leather, brushed aluminum, and wood accents and was well-insulated from the engine and outside noise. Besides comforts like front seats with massage function and innovative climate control, the W221 was also the first Benz to feature Night View Assist. A hybrid version was also added to the lineup.

The engine lineup was extensive--gasolines ranged from 3.5L to 6.2L, while diesels were a 2.1L inline four-cylinder, 3.0L V6, and 4.0L V8. The 3.5L gasoline was used in the hybrid powertrain.

Sixth Generation (W222/C217/A217; 2013-2019)

For its sixth generation, the S-Class was designed with more organic lines. It still had a formidable appearance without looking too aggressive. With the W222, Benz introduced their industry-leading comfortable air suspension. Attention was paid, as always, to the interior. A new digital instrument panel was installed, and the technological gadgets on the dashboard were complemented by the use of organic materials such as leather and wood.

Seventh Generation (W223; 2020-present)

The coupe and cabriolet models were replaced by the AMG GT and SL Class models. Once again, the inside of the S-Class is where all the magic happens. The S-Class comes with the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment unit that features up to five displays with OLED technology, an augmented reality head-up display, and an ambient lighting system. The seventh generation also debuted new rear seat airbags that deploy a bag that fills with ambient air instead of conventional fully gas-inflated airbags. Most of the engines come with mild hybrid technology.

Engine Performance & Technology

Engines used in the S-Class are robust, reliable, and also fuel-efficient. Specific Benz engines are labeled with "BlueEfficiency," Benz's trademark for their most eco-friendly and fuel-efficient cars that feature a suite of fuel-saving and pollutant-reducing modifications. These engines have been incorporated with CGI technologies to optimize fuel consumption.

For the seventh generation, a new 48v architecture allows many of the S-Class's engines to be fitted with mild-hybrid technology.

Safety & Reliability

The S-Class is as safe a car as money can buy. Over its many generations, it has debuted many never-before-seen safety technologies, many of which continue only to be used in top-of-the-line vehicles, such as the rear seat airbags of the seventh generation. Besides all the standard equipment, the S-Class can come with Mercedes Benz's Intelligent Drive suite of safety technologies that features adaptive cruise control, brake assist, steering assist, lane-keeping assist, high beam assist, and Attention Assist, as well as other tech like driver drowsiness detection, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, park assist and more.

Trim Configurations

The S-Class is available with different engines across its numerous trims. In addition, Mercedes-Benz has offered AMG high-performance versions of the S-Class since the fourth generation. These receive powerful AMG-designed and engineered engines like the monstrous 6.0L bi-turbocharged V12 in the S65 AMG of the fourth generation.
