NISSAN CARAVAN VAN

Simplicity is often the key to success. For over 50 years, Nissan's Caravan Van has been a reliable commercial vehicle for drivers around the world. It is also known by other names, such as the "Urvan" or the "Homy." No matter what name you know it by, the Caravan Van offers all the necessary utilities for a commercial van without the added costs of frills. If you want all the bells and whistles, they are yours to take. Read on to learn more about this dependable workhorse that is a staple in many business fleets.

Origin

The Caravan Van from Nissan originated in 1965 as the Homy by Prince, which was a passenger van with a capacity of 15 seats based on the light-duty truck called the Homer. The van was brought under the Nissan brand only in 1966, after the Nissan-Prince merger, and was renamed as the Nissan Homy Prince.

1st Generation (B640; 1965-1973)

Following the inclusion of the Homy under the Nissan brand, it received the T20 model code and was subsequently reclassified as a commercial van. The Homy replaced Nissan's existing cabover truck and cargo van, the Cabal. From 1973, the Homy was also available in a rebadged version as the Caravan. The first-generation Caravan was powered by a 1.6L inline four-cylinder gasoline engine.

2nd Generation (E20, E21, E22; 1973-1980)

The second-generation Caravan was produced in four different seating configurations--a three-, five-, seven-, and ten-seater. The practical and reliable Caravan gained popularity in Europe's fire departments and ambulances. Under the hood, the Caravan got a 1.5L inline four-cylinder, a 2.0L inline four-cylinder, or a 2.2L inline four-cylinder diesel.

3rd Generation (E23; 1980-1985)

With its elongated (for today's standards) and boxy frame, the E23 Caravan bore much resemblance to a bus. A 1982 facelift gave the Caravan radial tires as standard in all versions except the lowest trims, added a new dashboard, as well as removed the ventilation window in the front doors. More importantly, power steering and automatic transmission made their way into the Caravan for the first time. Engines for the third generation were a 1.6L, 1.8L, and two 2.0L inline four-cylinder petrol, a 2.2L and 2.3L inline four-cylinder diesel, and a 2.0L inline four-cylinder turbodiesel in the coach versions.

4th Generation (E24; 1986-2000)

The fourth-generation Caravan received cosmetic changes like a new grille and larger tail lights (depending on trim) as part of two facelifts. These facelifts also brought about changes to the engine lineup. Depending on the model year and trim, the E24 Caravan featured three 2.0L inline four-cylinders, a 2.4L inline four-cylinder, and a 3.0L V6 six-cylinder for its petrol engines. Diesel engines were 2.3L, 2.5L, 2.7L, and 3.2L inline four-cylinders, while turbodiesels were the 2.0L LD20T and 2.7L TD27T inline four-cylinders. Transmissions were 4- or 5-speed manuals or a 4-speed automatic.

5th Generation (E25; 2001-2011)

Nissan rebuilt the fifth generation Caravan on an entirely new chassis and elongated the Caravan by 5mm as part of a facelift. In addition to 2 2.0L, a 2.4L, and a 2.5L inline four-cylinder, this generation received a 3.0L inline four-cylinder diesel and a standout 3.0L intercooled inline four-cylinder turbodiesel.

6th Generation (E26; 2012-present)

In 2012, the NV350 Caravan replaced the outgoing fifth-generation Caravan. It responded to growing demands for even greater body styles and configurations, becoming available in long-wheelbase, wide-body, and high-roof versions. As part of the latter of two facelifts, the NV350 Caravan also has a flat-bottom steering wheel and the latest version of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility safety technology suite. Petrol engines were 2.0L or 2.5L inline four-cylinders, while diesels were 2.4L or 2.5L inline four-cylinder turbodiesels.

Engine Performance & Technology

The Caravan has a suite of reliable, efficient, and robust engines to help you go the extra mile. Highlights include the all-new 2.5L YD25DDTi intercooled turbodiesel engine with clean diesel technology for reduced emissions while delivering exceptional horsepower, as well as the electronically controlled version of the TD27Ti, the TD27ETi, as used in the fourth-generation Caravan. The TD27Ti had already been an engine well-known for its indestructibility, but with the addition of electronic control, it added to its list of merits exceptional fuel efficiency.

Safety & Reliability

In addition to the standard array of safety equipment like airbags and seatbelts with pre-tensioners, later versions of the Caravan (and the higher trims) feature more advanced safety technologies like Nissan's Intelligent Mobility safety suite. Among the technologies in the safety suite are lane departure warning, intelligent emergency brake, and intelligent around-view monitor.

Trim Configurations

The list of trim configurations for the Caravan is nearly endless. Depending on the model year, the Caravan came in a large number of seating capacities like 3-, 5-, 6-, 8-, 9-, 10-, and even up to an 18-seater (in the Philippines). Different grades also exist, again depending on the region. Higher grades can come paired with a high roof (the GX for the fifth generation in the Philippines) and other luxuries such as cruise control and upgraded upholstery (fourth generation).
