NISSAN NOTE

Small in stature but packed with all the essentials, the Nissan Note stays true to its name and remains an outstanding choice in the compact car segment. In particular, the Note has found popularity among young and active families looking for a fuel-efficient, practical, and maneuverable urban commuter. And with an attractive price tag, the Nissan Note offers the perfect balance of features and affordability. Origin

Nissan designed the Note to replace their unpopular Almera Tino, which sold a mere 200,000 units in Europe over seven years. Despite the millions that Nissan had spent on its development, it was meant to be priced affordably and be widely accessible to drivers everywhere. In 2004, its concept model, the Tone, was revealed at the 2004 Paris Motor Show, and subsequently, in the same year, the Note hit the European market. It was only in 2005 that the Nissan Note went on sale in Japan.

1st Generation (E11; 2004-2013)

The first generation, the E11, has largely been credited with building up Nissan's reputation for practicality. It was tall, narrow, and long, providing driver and passengers alike with excellent head clearance and interior space and making entry and exit a breeze. Despite its compact size, the cabin had substantial room for comfortable seating.

Fuel economy was exceptional thanks to its fuel-efficient engines. Petrol engines for the first generation Note were the 1.4L CR14DE, 1.5L HR15DE, and 1.6L HR16DE inline four-cylinders, while the diesel engine was the 1.5L K9K dCi inline four-cylinder turbodiesel. The Note came with a five-speed manual transmission, with a four-speed automatic and CVT available in Europe and Japan, respectively.

2nd Generation (E12; 2012-2017)

With the second generation Note, the E12, Nissan opted for a more dynamic design. The E12 had a more modern and streamlined appearance, appealing to drivers who wanted a practical option that didn't look like one. Nissan's Divide-N-Hide flexible cargo system made an appearance in the second generation to give the Note even more seating and cargo options. Fuel efficiency was improved due to a more aerodynamic body. In 2017, a facelifted Note model with a series hybrid drivetrain called e-Power was introduced.

Petrol engines for the E12 were the 1.2L HR12DE inline three-cylinder, the 1.2L HR12DDR inline three-cylinder, and the 1.6L HR16DE inline four-cylinder. The only diesel engine was the 1.5L K9K inline four-cylinder, and the hybrid drivetrain used the 1.2L HR12DE e-Power inline three-cylinder with an electric motor.

3rd Generation (E13; 2020-present)

The third and current generation (at the time of writing this article) of the Note went on sale at the end of 2020. Its front fascia received a makeover such that the headlights were now positioned level with the front grille. It utilizes the Renault-Nissan alliance CMF-B platform and, in keeping with Nissan's growing commitment to more eco-friendly vehicles, arrives only with an e-Power hybrid drivetrain—either a 2WD or 4WD (introduced in 2021). This drivetrain makes use of a 1.2L HR12DE e-Power hybrid inline three-cylinder.

Engine Performance & Technology

Nissan's K9K series of inline four-cylinder diesel engines available in the first and second generation of the Note offer outstanding torque and fuel efficiency - in case you were already looking for more fuel savings from your efficient Note.

Safety & Reliability

For such an affordable car, the Note comes jam-packed with an extensive list of safety features that keep occupants safe and contribute to accident avoidance. This includes all the core safety features like a high-strength and structurally reinforced body and airbags (though the exact number depends on the trim), ABS antilock braking system, ESC electronic stability control, and TCS traction control system (depending on the generation).

The newer Note versions, including the third generation Note e-Power, are now equipped with Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies. These technologies include Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB), which automatically identifies when the car in front is braking and initiates the vehicle's brakes in response. This added safety feature ensures a safer driving experience for the driver and passengers. Another advanced safety technology found in third-generation Note e-Power is the Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention. It actively steers the vehicle back into the lane if it detects a car in another lane that has gone unseen.

Trim Configurations

While trim designations of the Note depend on the market and model year, the most common trim designations are the base S trim, which offers the essentials like air conditioning and power windows; the middle SV, which can come with additional features like a better stereo system and interior finishings; and the top-of-the-line SL, which has the most premium furnishings and gadgets like a superior audio system and heated seats. The exact features available on each trim depend on the model year.

Available as an option in the second generation and as the standard in the third generation, the Note e-Power is a hybrid version of the Note that offers even more significant fuel savings. For the third generation, the premium version of the Note E-Power is known as the Note Aura. It gets an updated front fascia and electric motor and also comes in four models: the G, G leather edition, G Four, and G Four leather edition.
