NISSAN SKYLINE

Few names in the automotive world inspire as much respect as the Nissan Skyline. Continuously developed for more than six decades, the Skyline has evolved from a modest luxury family sedan into one of the most legendary performance nameplates in history. Across its generations, the Skyline has been offered as a coupe, sedan, station wagon, crossover, and pickup, but convertibles have only been available in its earliest generations and are very rare. However, common threads that run through all versions of the Skyline are excellent performance, handling, and attractive styling. To learn more about this icon of Japanese engineering, keep reading.

Origin

The Skyline's story begins in postwar Japan, when it was first produced by the Prince Motor Company—then known as Fuji Precision Industries—as a luxury four-door sedan. The Prince Motor Company later merged with Nissan, and what followed was a steady progression of the Skyline into a performance powerhouse.

First Generation (Prince Skyline, 1957–1962)

The original Prince Skyline debuted as a compact sedan focused on comfort and everyday usability. It was powered by 1.5 and 1.9 L inline four-cylinder gasoline engines and resembled American cars of the 1950s, with rear tail fins, chrome molding, and two-tone paint. Other body styles available included a five-door station wagon and two-door coupe; the convertible was limited to certain years and markets and was much less common than the sedan or coupe.

Second Generation (Prince Skyline, 1963–1968)

The second-generation Skyline began to incorporate sportier styling cues, receiving rounded brake lights and integrated tail lights. The S57—the rebranded deluxe trim—was powered by the then-most powerful 1.5 L engine in Japan, the G15 OHC capable of 87 hp.

Third Generation (C10; 1968–1971)

Now sold under the Nissan badge following the Prince-Nissan merger in 1966, the C10 was positioned as a more sports-oriented sedan and coupe. The first GT-R Skyline was released in 1969 and is affectionately known to fans as the "Hakosuka" Skyline, or Boxy Skyline. Powering the GT-R Skyline was the 2.0 L S20 inline-six, producing 160 hp.

Fourth Generation (C110; 1972–1976)

This generation gained more curvaceous styling and a larger body, making it resemble American muscle cars of the time. The GT-R hardtop was released in 1972 but was discontinued in 1973 following the oil crisis, which led consumers to favor more fuel-efficient vehicles, making it one of the rarer GT-R Skylines.

Fifth Generation (C210; 1977–1980)

Along with the sedan and coupe, the fifth-generation Skyline was also available as a station wagon and light van. The GT-R coupe was discontinued, and the new GT-EX came with a turbocharged L20ET engine. Gasoline engines ranged from 1.6 to 2.3 L, and diesels were available in 2.0 L or 2.8 L options.

Sixth Generation (R30; 1981–1984)

The R30 ushered in the modern Skyline look, with sharper lines and advanced technology. It was available in several body styles, including coupe, liftback, sedan, and station wagon, with more than 25 variants throughout the generation.

Seventh Generation (R31; 1985–1988)

Nissan rolled out new technology for the seventh generation, like Super-HICAS four-wheel steering. The ATTESA all-wheel-drive system was introduced later in the R32. The seventh generation also saw the start of the famous RB engine family that would be at the heart of Skyline performance for decades.

Eighth Generation (R32; 1989–1992)

All body styles besides the two-door coupe and four-door sedan were dropped for this generation. This generation also released perhaps the most iconic Skyline of all—the R32 GT-R—which earned the nickname "Godzilla" after dominating Australian touring car racing.

Ninth Generation (R33; 1993–1997)

The ninth generation improved comfort, safety, and handling with features such as a new airbag system, an internal crash bar, and—on certain versions—the HICAS four-wheel steering system, Super-HICAS.

Tenth Generation (R34; 1998–2000)

The R34 introduced the more efficient RB25DET NEO engine. In 2000, it updated its front bumper and made xenon headlights standard across its lineup.

Eleventh Generation (V35; 2001–2005)

This generation was based on the FM platform shared with the Fairlady Z and used a front-midship engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The GT-R was spun off into a separate model, ceasing to be part of the Skyline lineup.

Twelfth Generation (V36; 2006–2013)

The V36 embraced its role as a premium sports sedan, gaining a more aggressive appearance with a longer hood and flowing lines. It introduced features such as adaptive cruise control, advanced navigation with HDD storage, keyless entry, push-button start, and improved multi-link suspension geometry.

Thirteenth Generation (V37; 2014–present)

Internationally sold as the Infiniti Q50, the V37 is even more sophisticated than the outgoing V36, thanks to a sleeker, aerodynamic body with a bold grille. For the first time, the Skyline features a hybrid drivetrain. This generation is currently only available as a four-door sedan.

Engine Performance and Technology

The Skyline's engines evolved dramatically over time. Early models used small inline-fours, while later generations became famous for the RB-series inline-six engines—including the RB26DETT twin-turbo found in R32 through R34 GT-Rs, which are known for their strength and tuning potential. More recent Skylines also incorporate turbocharging and hybrid systems to balance power and efficiency.

Safety and Reliability

The Skyline has earned a reputation for a high level of safety and reliability. Newer Skylines—such as the V36—come standard with anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), traction control, and multiple airbags. The V37 adds the ProPILOT driver-assist suite with features like lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning with emergency braking, and semi-autonomous highway driving. ProPILOT 2.0 goes further with hands-free highway cruising, driver attention monitoring, automatic lane changes, and emergency stop assist.
