Origin
At a time when body-on frames were losing popularity in the 4x4 segment, Nissan sought to enter the SUV market with a more compact solution. The X-Trail compact crossover was their solution conceived and launched at the Paris Motor Show in September 2000. Combining utility, comfort, and overall outstanding value, the X-Trail was an immediate hit and continued to be so for its subsequent two decades and four generations.
1st Generation (T30; 2000-2006)
The chunky first generation X-Trail, the T30, was built on the same platform as the Primera, Nissan's large family car. Boxily shaped, the X Trail looked appropriate for both outdoor and urban settings, and with its substantial glass coverage, it gave excellent visibility for drivers and passengers alike. Most importantly, the X-Trail was a trailblazer in the segment as it brought a genuine, compact 4x4 SUV to the market and came equipped with the ALL MODE 4x4 designed for a secure and relaxing drive on any terrain.
Petrol engines were 2.0L and 2.5L inline four-cylinders (including a turbocharged unit), while the diesel was a 2.2L inline four-cylinder.
2nd Generation (T31; 2007-2012)
You'd be forgiven for mistaking the second-generation X-Trail T31 as part of the founding lineup. Aesthetically, the second generation inherited much of the first's design DNA, except it came with rounded corners and larger headlights. The defining feature of the second generation was its extensive D-pillar. Five adults could fit in the spacious T31, and the three seated at the back received greater legroom thanks to the flat rear floor.
Petrol engines were 2.0L and 2.5L inline four-cylinders, while the diesel was a 2.0L inline four-cylinder. In addition to the standard six-speed manual transmission, there were optional six-speed automatic and continuously variable transmissions (CVT).
3rd Generation (T32; 2013-2020)
For the third generation of the X-Trail, Nissan dropped the hitherto box-like packaging for a more aerodynamic design with softer, flowing lines. It received a new grille framed with chrome and a sloped windscreen for decreased drag. Premium technologies were introduced to a new market area with the third generation under Nissan's Intelligent Mobility and NissanConnect, contributing to its success as the world's best-selling SUV. The third generation could seat up to seven adults (as an option), although the last two would be in for a bit of a squeeze in its final third row of seats. The middle row of seats could be moved forward if necessary for additional legroom.
Engines were 1.3L, 1.6L, 2.0L, and 2.5L inline four-cylinder gasoline, 1.6L, 1.7L, and 2.0L inline four-cylinder diesel, and a 2.0L petrol hybrid. An intelligent all-wheel-drive system that provides stable cornering on all surfaces was available as an option.
4th Generation (T33; 2021-present)
Significant strides were made with the fourth-generation X-Trail in the realm of looks and technology. The radiator grille now comes flanked by new LED headlights, while its bumper features side scoops and a wide grille on its lower portion. The instrument panel made way for a TFT and a 12.3-inch infotainment display on the inside.
Besides 1.5L and 2.5L gasoline engines, there are petrol hybrid drivetrains that feature 1.5L KR15DDT e-Power inline three-cylinder gasoline engines. The fourth generation uses Nissan's Xtronic CVT.
Engine Performance & Technology
The HR13DDT all-aluminum used in the third-generation X-Trail is an outstanding engine created through an alliance between Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi. To name just a few of its features, the HR13DDT comes with direct-injection technology, a lifetime timing chain, and Nissan's Variable Valve Timing Control System, allowing it to achieve exceptional fuel efficiency and longevity.
The KR15DDT VC-Turbo featured in the fourth-generation e-Power X-Trail is another standout. The KR15DDT, which uses a variable compression ratio that allows both high power output and increased fuel efficiency, makes an appearance on the 2022 Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems for its smoothness and ease of driving.
Safety & Reliability
Nissan focuses on safety and reliability with the X-Trail. All the usual suspects, like a high-strength and structurally reinforced body and airbags (though the exact number depends on the trim), ABS antilock braking system, ESC electronic stability control, and TCS traction control system, come as standard on the X-Trail (depending on the generation).
In the 2022 edition, Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies, such as Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB), provide additional protection to the X-Trail by identifying when the car in front is braking and starting to brake the vehicle accordingly. Another advanced safety technology found in 2022 is the Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention. It actively steers the X-Trail back into the lane if it detects a vehicle in another lane that has gone unseen.
Trim Configurations
