Origin

The CX-5 went from the Minagi concept car to production for the mass market in just three years in 2012. It shared a platform used by both the third-generation Mazda3 and the third-generation Mazda6. In the same year, it won the Car of the Year Japan award.

First Generation (KE; 2012-2016)

The first generation CX-5 made waves when it was first introduced, the biggest reason being its looks. Among other SUVs on the market, and even within the Mazda lineup, the CX-5 stood out with its bold and aggressive stance and sleekness created by sculptured lines on the body as viewed from the side and swept-back headlights. This dynamic look was a product of Mazda's new Kodo Soul of Motion design language, which debuted with the CX-5 SUV. In contrast to the exterior, the interior of the CX-5 was more toned down. It was fitted with a binocular-style instrument cluster while also getting a tall center stack that acted as a form of separation between the front row and tall back row of 4/20/40 seats, which could fit three adults comfortably. A mid-generation facelift brought along changes to its front fascia that included new headlights and grille, as well as new side scoops. The infotainment system was also upgraded, and Mazda's latest Human Machine Interface was featured.

Under the hood, the first generation CX-5 was powered by Mazda's Skyactiv technology engines. Gasolines were 2.0L and 2.5L inline four-cylinders, while diesels were a single 2.2L inline four-cylinder. Both the 2.0L gasoline and 2.2L turbodiesel were mated to SkyActiv automatic or manual transmissions, while the 2.5L was only available with the automatic.

Second Generation (KF; 2017-present)

Why fix something that's not broken but rather is a huge selling point? The second-generation CX-5 looks much like the first-generation one but has still received minor tweaks, such as dynamic steering LED headlamps, fog lights, and full LED tail lights to the rear. The interior is spacious, especially with plenty of head clearance and leg room for the rear passengers.

The second-generation CX-5 offers a range of engine options. You can choose from a 2.0L and 2.5L inline four-cylinder gasoline engines and a 2.2L inline four-cylinder turbodiesel. The 2.0L is able to produce up to 155 hp, while the 2.5L is capable of 184 hp, all while maintaining decent fuel efficiencies.

SkyActiv-D: Mazda's Diesel Engines

Mazda's clean diesel engine is the SkyActiv-D. Fuel efficiency is improved thanks to a low compression ratio, while a two-stage turbocharger achieves smooth response at all engine speeds and increases low- and high-end torque. The 2.2L turbocharged diesel unit is capable of up to 173 hp.

These engines are also mated to Skyactiv-Drive and Skyactiv MT--Mazda's Skyactiv line of automatic and manual transmissions that are engineered to improve overall driveability.

Safety & Reliability
