AUDI Q5

The sporty yet practical compact luxury crossover Audi Q5 SUV exudes confidence, and rightfully so--it has been one of Audi's bestsellers because of its ability to strike the perfect balance between drive performance and everyday utility. Ever since it first began production in 2008, the Q5 consistently exceeds expectations of the luxury crossover segment with each generation. If you're looking for a luxury SUV that will never fail to surprise you with every drive, choose the Audi Q5. You can save by going the used-car route, but make sure to purchase from a reputable second-hand car dealer like BE FORWARD.

Origin

The world caught its first glimpse of the Q5 in the form of the Audi Cross Cabriolet quattro concept in 2007 at the Shanghai Auto Show. It was a 2-door convertible powered by a 3.0L TDI engine with quattro permanent four-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission. Some of its standout features were a Copper Sunset body, LED headlights, 21-inch wheels, seats with White Stone leather upholstery, and Audi Drive Select.

1st Generation (Typ 8R; 2008-2016)

The first generation Audi Q5 Typ 8R was the third member of the B8 family and was based on Audi's MLB platform. As a smaller version of the Q7, the Q5 found a large following among those who wanted an SUV performance and utility with the fuel efficiency of a sedan. Audi spared no expense on the Q5 for its equipment -- the long list of advanced features included a Harman/Becker Automotive Systems-produced Multi Media Interface with navigation, communication, wide-screen entertainment and 3D orientation view; hill descent control for easier and safer navigation of steep inclines; and Trailer Stability Program to reduce swaying and shaking while towing.

For its engines, the first generation Typ 8R received a 2.0L TFSI inline four-cylinder and a 3.2L FSI V6 six-cylinder gasoline, as well as a 2.0L TDI inline four-cylinder and 3.0L TDI V6 six-cylinder. Six-speed manual transmissions were standard with the 2.0L TFSI and 2.0L TDI, with the 3.2L FSI getting the 6-speed Tiptronic and 7-speed S tronic and the 3.0L with the 7-speed S tronic used in other variants. A hybrid Q5 initially slated to be released at launch eventually went on sale in 2012. This came with a hybrid system made up of a 2.0L TFSI inline four-cylinder combined with an electric motor.

2nd Generation (Typ 80A; 2017-present)

Audi redesigned the Q5 inside and out, marking the beginning of its second generation in 2017. Besides a new front grille, the Q5 grew in length, width, and height, which all lent themselves to a more aggressive design and more interior room for drivers and occupants. From 2019 onwards, heated front seats, rear electric child locks, a 7-inch infotainment screen, and roof crossbars became standard equipment. A facelift in 2021 brought along the Generation 3 infotainment technologies and changes to the exterior, like a revamped grille, bumper side air intakes, side sill, and rear trim. In the same year, the fastback Sportback version of the Q5 that featured a sportier appearance was added to the lineup.

Engines for the second generation Q5 were 2.0L TFSI inline four-cylinders and a 3.0L TFSI V6 six-cylinder, and for diesel, 2.0L TDI inline four-cylinders and 3.0L TDI V6 six-cylinders. The four-cylinder engines were mated to a 7-speed direct shift automatic gearbox, while the 3.0L TDI was joined to an eight-speed ZF 8HP automatic.

Engine Performance & Technology

Audi's engines used in the Q5 are robust and high-performing. Many of their engines feature Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) or its turbo version, TFSI. Audi's TFSI engines combine turbocharging and direct fuel injection, directly injecting fuel into the combustion chambers, enhancing performance and efficiency. One standout is the 3.0L TFSI DOHC V6 six-cylinder that comes with a Double OverHead Camshaft design, which improves engine performance. The diesel equivalent, TDI, is also found in their diesel engines. In addition, all of the Q5 engines from 2012 onwards feature the Start-Stop system that helps save on fuel by turning off the engine when it detects the car has come to a stop and restarting it when the throttle is pressed.

Safety & Reliability

As expected from Audi, the Q5 is a safe and reliable vehicle. With proper maintenance and care, they can last well over a decade and consistently perform well on safety ratings such as the Euro New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP).The Q5 features an ultra-strength steel-aluminum hybrid constructed body, dual front airbags, side airbags, head-protecting side curtains, ABS brakes, and electronic stability control. Additionally, newer Q5s can feature many advanced active and passive safety features such as Audi Pre-Sense, Adaptive Cruise Control, Adaptive Cruise Assist, Active Lane Assist, Audi Side Assist, Audi Night Vision Assist, Forward Facing Camera and Radar System, Pedestrian and Vehicle Detection, LED Headlights, and Audi Parking System Plus. This exact list will depend on the model and model year.

Trim Configurations

For the first generation, the S line package brings along 20-inch S line wheels, headlight washers, sport steering wheels with shift paddles, brushed aluminum inlays, S line aluminum door sills, and a black headliner, while the Offroad exterior package adds front and rear underbody protection panels, flared fender, and door sill protection.

Audi also released the SQ5 in 2013. This was the S model performance version of the Q5, powered by a 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 six-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Other upgrades included a sports suspension and, on the inside, Pearl Nappa leather/Alcantara power-adjustable sport seats with optional leather upholstery.
