Origin

After discontinuing the Audi Coupe in 1996 and being absent from the premium coupe segment for almost a decade, Audi made a strong comeback in 2007 with the A5. The A5, designed by Walter De Silva, surpassed consumer expectations with its attractive design and versatility. It offered a variety of engines, including turbocharged four-cylinder and V6 options, front and all-wheel drive options, and both manual and automatic transmission. The A5's well-designed interior and balanced handling made it a popular choice for consumers looking for a sleek and practical coupe.

1st Generation (2007-2016)

"The Audi A5 is the most beautiful car I have ever designed." The former head of Volkswagen Group Design produced his magnum opus as the A5 in 2007. The exterior of the A5 was the perfect blend of a coupe and grand tourer, sporting a long hood that measured close to a quarter of the vehicle's entire length, a raked windshield, a sloped-down rear window, and a short deck with a tiny lip spoiler. In 2011, the front fascia was updated with a new set of headlights that featured LED daytime running lights inside them. The standard features included mildly bolstered front seats with fabric upholstery, a TFT display for the onboard computer, and a color screen for the infotainment system.

Engines for the first generation A5 were, for petrol, a 1.8L and 2.0L TFSI inline four-cylinder, a 3.2L FSI and 3.0L TFSI V6 six-cylinder, and a 4.2L FSI V8 eight-cylinder. Diesel engines were a 2.0L TDI inline four-cylinder and 2.7L and 3.0L TDI V6 six-cylinders.

2nd Generation (2017-2023)

Audi implemented the brand's single-frame grille design language for the second generation into the A5. The 2017 A5 was sharper than ever, with distinct lines for its octagonal grille flanked by a pair of aggressively lean headlights. On the lower side of the A5, sharp ascending lines gave the compact coupe an even sportier appearance. Inside, the second generation A5 has either a mixed instrument panel or a completely digital Audi Virtual Cockpit with two easily adjustable bucket seats.

Engines for the second generation included a 2.0L TFSI inline four-cylinder gasoline, a 2.0L I inline four-cylinder, and 3.0L V6 six-cylinder turbodiesels. These were mated to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic.

3rd Generation (2024-present)

The third generation A5 was born as part of Audi's new strategy of allocating even numbers to electric vehicles and odd numbers to combustion cars. The A5/S5 succeeded the A4/S4 Saloon and Avant and is either a 5-door liftback or station wagon.

The third generation A5s are mild hybrids powered by a 2.0L turbo inline four-cylinder or 3.0L turbo V6 six-cylinder petrol and a 2.0L turbo inline four-cylinder diesel.
