AUDI A4

Audi's A4 is the German automobile manufacturer's sporty and practical compact executive sedan. Unlike the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Audi A4 features an understated yet refined exterior that may not immediately grab attention but will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression. On the inside and under the hood, Audi goes all out with the A4 - all generations of the A4 are well-equipped with the latest technologies and powerful and reliable engines. Origin

Development for what was to be the Audi A4 first began in 1988. In 1994, the first generation Typ 8D Audi built on the Volkswagen Group's B5 platform was launched as a four-door sedan, while the Avant estate A4 went on sale in 1994.

1st Generation (B5: Typ 8D; 1994-1999)

The Audi Typ 8D was built on the Volkswagen B5 platform, allowing longitudinal-mounted engines and front or all-wheel drive. The design of the Typ 8D was clean thanks to clear-lens headlights, a raked A-pillar, and a trunk that ended in a sharp line. Multiple facelifts occurred during the first generation of the A4, which involved replacing engines and introducing the performance S4 and even higher-performance RS4 (technically introduced in the second generation B5 RS4 Avant in 1999).

For its engines, the Typ 8D A4 got 1.6 and 1.8L inline four-cylinder petrol, 2.4L - 2.8L V6 six-cylinder petrol, 1.9L DI and TDI inline four-cylinder diesel, and 2.5L TDI V6 six-cylinder diesel.

2nd Generation (B6: Typ 8E/8H; 2000-2003)

The second generation A4, also known as the B6 Typ 8E, used Volkswagen's B6 platform and took design cues from the Bauhaus design language of the Audi A6. At its launch in 2000, the Audi A4 already faced intense competition in the form of BMW's 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz's C-Class. The edge it had over its rivals was its front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive systems, which were easier to use than the conventional rear-wheel-drive systems. On the exterior, the A4 featured narrow headlights and high-mounted tail lights set into a body of clean flats and curves.

Engines ranged from 1.6L to 4.2L for petrol, with a 1.9L inline four-cylinder TDI and a 2.5L V6 six-cylinder TDI also available.

3rd Generation (B7: Typ 8E/8H; 2004-2007)

Although the third generation B7 retained the same platform as the previous generation, it looked like a completely different car. It featured new lighting designs, such as boomerang-style headlights, and also came in larger dimensions - much of which was due to a new rear bumper. Internally, the B7 has a better sound system and uses different materials.

Engines for the B7 Typ 8E were 1.6L - 2.0L inline four-cylinder petrol, 3.2L V6 six-cylinder, and 4.2L V8 eight-cylinder FSI petrol, 1.9L and 2.0L TDI inline four-cylinder diesel, and 2.5L, 2.7L, and 3.0L TDI V6 six-cylinder diesel.

4th Generation (B8: Typ 8K; 2008-2015)

The most prominent change for the fourth generation B8 Typ 8K was its new platform, a variant of the Audi Modular Longitudinal Platform, that enabled the engine to be repositioned for a more balanced weight distribution. The B8 had plenty of space on the inside for both driver and passengers alike, with enough room to comfortably seat tall passengers in the rear of the car. It also featured a new infotainment unit on its dashboard.

The wide range of engines included 1.8L - 4.2L inline four-cylinder and V6 six-cylinder petrol, a 2.0L inline four-cylinder TDI, and 2.7L and 3.0L V6 six-cylinder TDIs.

5th Generation (B9: Typ 8W; 2016-present)

Though larger than the B8, the B9 has a more aerodynamic design and is purportedly up to 120 kg lighter thanks to a new lightweight aluminum-hybrid construction. This generation is also the first to feature a virtual cockpit, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a full-color head-up display, and Audi pre-sense.

Engines are 1.4L and 2.0L TFSI inline four-cylinder petrol, 2.9L and 3.0L TFSI V6 six-cylinder petrol, a 2.0L TDI inline four-cylinder diesel, and 3.0L TDI V6 six-cylinder diesel. Transmissions are a six-speed manual, seven-speed S-tronic, or eight-speed Tiptronic.

Engine Performance & Technology

Audi fits the A4 with reliable and powerful engines. Many of their engines feature Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) or its turbo version, TFSI. Audi's TFSI engines combine turbocharging and direct fuel injection, directly injecting fuel into the combustion chambers, enhancing performance and efficiency. One standout is the 3.0L TFSI DOHC V6 six-cylinder with a double overhead camshaft design, which improves engine performance. The diesel equivalent, TDI, is also found in their diesel engines. In addition, the A4 engines from 2012 onwards feature the Start-Stop system that helps save on fuel by turning off the engine when it detects the car has come to a stop and restarting it when the throttle is pressed.

Safety & Reliability

The A4 is a safe and reliable vehicle, consistently performing well on safety ratings such as the Euro New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP). The A4 can come with lightweight aluminum-hybrid construction, dual front airbags, side airbags, head-protecting side curtains, ABS brakes, and electronic stability control. Newer model years of the A4 are outfitted with many advanced active and passive safety features, including the Audi Pre-Sense collision avoidance system. This exact list will depend on the model and model year.

Trim Configurations

Audi amps up the performance of the A4 in their S4 and RS4 versions. Depending on the model year, they can receive upgrades, including more powerful engines like 4.2L V8s, S-line steering wheel, and redesigned wheels.

Standard A4s are available in trims such as Premium, Premium Plus, Ultra Premium, Ultra Premium Plus, and Prestige, as well as in either FWD or Quattro (Audi's AWD).
