Origin
The Canter is a popular range of light-duty commercial vehicles that is widely used for various purposes such as delivery, transportation, and construction. It has a long history dating back to 1963, when it was first introduced with a payload capacity of 2 tons. It was designed to replace the T710 model, which was produced between 1960 and 1963. Over the years, the Canter has undergone numerous changes and improvements to keep up with the evolving needs of the market. It is known for its durability, reliability, and efficiency, making it a popular choice for businesses and individuals.
1st Generation (T720; 1963-1967)
The first-generation T720 was a truck with round single headlights capable of hauling two tons. Its engine choices were the 2.0L inline four-cylinder KE42, capable of 89 hp, and the diesel 2.0L 4DQ11A, capable of 67 hp.
2nd Generation (T90; 1968-1972)
The second-generation T90 was available in an extended-wheelbase version and, later, a dual-rear-wheel version of the extended-wheelbase model. It arrived with various engines, such as the diesel 2.0L 4DR1 capable of 74 hp that replaced the 4DQ11A, the KE42 carried over from the previous generation, the 2.3L KE47 that made 94 hp, and the diesel 2.7L 79-hp 4DR5.
3rd Generation (T200; 1973-1977)
Besides expanding the range of wheelbases and bed heights for the third generation, Mitsubishi also added a 3-ton payload variant to the Canter lineup. The engines were either the diesel 4DR5 or the gasoline KE42 and KE47. These gasoline engines were later replaced by the 2.0L 97-hp 4G52 and the 2.4L 108-hp 4G53.
4th Generation (T200; 1973-1984)
There's a Canter for every business owner--the fourth-generation lineup included wide-cabin Canters with 2-, 3-, and 3.5-ton payloads, a narrow Canter, and a "Walk-Through Van," both of which had 1.5-ton payloads. The engines available for the T200 were mainly diesel, such as the 4DR5, but the fourth generation also came with a 2.5L inline four-cylinder 4G54 capable of 102 hp.
5th Generation (1985-1992)
For its fifth generation, the Canter received a cosmetic makeover with larger rectangular headlights and a squared and smoothened-out body. This generation also offered a 4WD option and ABS brakes--a first in this class of vehicle--in 1991. Diesel engines ranged from 2.0L up to 4.2L, such as the 3.5L inline four-cylinder 4D32 and turbocharged 3.9L inline four-cylinder 4D34 capable of 163 hp.
6th Generation (1993-2001)
The sixth-generation Canter introduced two more variants--a 3.5-ton payload narrow and a 4-ton payload wide Canter. Specific variants of the sixth-generation Canter were also equipped with ABS. The Canter's engines included two gasoline engines, the 2.0L 4G63 and the 2.4L 4G64, as well as diesels like the 4.9L inline four-cylinder direct-injection 4M50.
7th Generation (2002-2009)
The seventh generation elevated comfort and safety levels thanks to new disc brakes, Xenon headlights on certain models, and a larger "wide" cabin. The shift stick was also moved onto the dashboard to create more room between the driver's and center seat--another first for its class. The seventh generation came with just one gasoline engine: the 2.0L 4G63. Diesels ranged from 2.8L to 5.2L.
8th Generation (2010-present)
The most recent generation of the Canter comes in either 1.7m standard or 2.0m wide cabins and has chassis weights between 3.5 and 8.55 tons. This generation of Canter featured specialized body styles like drop-side and dumper beds. An Eco-Hybrid Canter with a drivetrain featuring a 150-hp diesel engine combined with a 40kw electric motor was also introduced for this generation. Diesel engines were variations of the 3.0L 4P10.
Engine Performance & Technology
The 3.0L 4P10 that powers the latest generation of Canters is a highly efficient unit with low fuel consumption. It features Mercedes-Benz's Bluetec emissions reduction system, which combines a urea-selective catalytic reduction system and a regeneration-control diesel particulate filter. This system allows the latest Canter to achieve an 8 to 10% reduction in fuel consumption over the previous version.
Safety & Reliability
Mitsubishi worries about safety on the Mitsubishi Canter, so you don't have to worry about it. Depending on the generation and version, the Canter can come standard with an airbag system made up of front airbags for the driver and front passenger, side and curtain airbags, ABS, and EBD. In the latest generation, the Active Sideguard Assist, which predicts the area where the Canter will pass and detects obstacles in that region, comes as standard. Other available advanced safety features are the Advanced Emergency Braking System, which detects vehicles and pedestrians and assists the driver in avoiding a crash; the Electronic Stability Program, which detects any skidding or overturning risks; and the Lane Departure Warning System.
Trim Configurations
The Canter comes in many versions varying in chassis and cabin sizes, payload weights, wheelbase lengths, and body styles, ensuring that you find one that fits your needs. A variant known as the Canter Guts, with a standard narrow cabin gross weight just exceeding 3.5 tons and a payload limited to 1.5 tons, is a JDM only available in Japan.
