MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER

Mitsubishi's Outlander is a practical and driveable midsize SUV with available all-wheel drive that's the companion you'll want for your family's active lifestyle. Originally a dynamically styled compact with five seats for its first generation, the Outlander has since grown into a seven-seater mid-size crossover with a good range of amenities capable of ferrying larger groups in comfort. Origin

The Mitsubishi Outlander was based on Mitsubishi's ASX concept vehicle that was unveiled at the 2001 North American International Auto Show. This concept vehicle was Mitsubishi's contender in a crossover SUV market that was trending towards vehicles that offered high ground clearance and four-wheel drive with car-like emissions, fuel economy, and size. In the domestic Japanese market, the Outlander was known as the Airtrek until 2005 when it adopted the Outlander name used for the export market.

First Generation (CY/ZE/ZF; 2001–2005)

The Outlander was launched in the Japanese market in 2001, and eventually found its way overseas to North America in 2003. It was built on the same platform as the Lancer, allowing it to be fitted with an all-wheel drive system. It didn't look much like the typical image of an SUV with its forward-tilted tailgate and car-like swept-back headlights. For its engines, the first generation Outlander came powered by 2.0 and 2.4 L inline four-cylinder gasoline engines, one of which was a 2.0 L gasoline turbo.

Second Generation (CW/ZG/ZH; 2006–2011)

For its second generation, Mitsubishi dropped the Airtrek nameplate locally, replacing it with the Outlander badge. The Outlander was delightfully styled with a good balance of curves and sharp angles, and was fitted with glass-covered headlights with split grille, and clear tail lights with LED-like lamps. From this version onwards, the Outlander grew in size to become a midsize SUV with a 2-3-2 seating configuration. Sports-like gear shifting was made possible thanks to paddle shifters found with the automatic gearbox, and a rotary knob that switched between front-wheel drive and all–wheel drive. One of its unique features was a "Flap Fold Tailgate”—a two-piece tailgate integrated into the rear bumper that could be folded down for easy loading, and served as a bench that could accommodate up to 180 kg with the tailgate open. Engines were 2.0, 2.4, and 3.0 L gasolines, and 2.0, 2.2, and 2.3 L diesels.

Third Generation (GF/GG/ZJ/ZK/ZL; 2012–2020)

The third generation Outlander came built on the GS Platform jointly developed with DaimlerChrysler, and featured a 2.67 m long wheelbase with 7 seats, although passengers in the last two seats would be in for more of a squeeze than in the previous generation. It came with a good range of features and advanced technologies, including an infotainment unit that could connect to Apple Carplay and Android Auto, as well as a middle row with sliding and adjustable backrest for improved comfort and easier access to the third row of seats. It got a lightweight body that weighed 200 kg less than the previous generation, and was designed with a lower drag coefficient, both of which gave it better fuel efficiency. For the first time, the Outlander came with such safety features as Forward Collision Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning. Powering this generation were 2.0, 2.4, and 3.0 L gasolines, a 2.3 L turbo diesel, and 2.0 and 2.3 L inline-four gasoline hybrids.

Fourth Generation (GM/GN/ZM; 2021–present)

The current fourth generation Outlander is a product of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, getting a bold yet not overly flashy exterior that features LED lights above the front fascia and squared LED headlights mounted on the sides, a shield-like chrome grille, and the Flap Fold tailgate of previous generations. Its interior was luxuriously equipped with either cloth or leather seats with premium upholstery, available 9.0-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display. The diesel versions were dropped for this generation, leaving the Outlander with a 1.4 L mild hybrid turbo gasoline, 2.5 L gasoline, and a 2.4 L gasoline hybrid.

Engine Performance & Technology

The Outlander can use Mitsubishi's MIVEC engines. MIVEC is Mitsubishi's variable valve timing engine technology that adjusts the timing of the intake and exhaust camshafts, resulting in increased power and torque output across a wide range of engine speeds. Moreover, the turbocharger can be spooled more accurately and quickly, leading to better fuel efficiency and improved performance. The third generation Outlander is available with Mitsubishi's MIVEC 6B3 V6 aluminium die-cast engine that churns out an impressive 227 hp and allows it to achieve 9.8 km/l.

Safety & Reliability

The Outlander boasts Mitsubishi's signature safety and reliability. In its second generation, the Outlander has come with Mitsubishi's RISE Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution body and received a four-star rating from the Euro NCAP car safety performance assessment program. The third generation onwards gets such standard safety features as front airbags, front side torso airbags with curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, Traction Control Logic, Active Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, and a brake pedal which recedes in a crash. Advanced features like 360-degree camera, forward collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring can come as options and/or in newer models and upper trims.

Trim Configurations

The Outlander comes in a number of trims that vary according to the market and generation. For example, the 2017 Japanese version includes the 20G with 2.0 L gasoline engine and 24G with 2.4 L gasoline and all-wheel drive that also come with a Safety Package and Navi Package which can feature Mitsubishi's E-assist of advanced safety features like forward collision mitigation. There are also PHEV versions of the Outlander known as the Outlander PHEV.
