Upon its release in 1993, the Suzuki Wagon R gave birth to the light wagon category that revolutionized the concept of the Japanese light motor vehicle, better known as Kei-class cars. The Wagon R has since become the archetype of the Kei-class car with its quirky design, spacious interior, ease of access, and user-friendly luggage space.
For its engine, the first generation gets a 660 cc 54 hp water-cooled inline three-cylinder SOHC 12-valve engine mated to a three-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission. Full-time 4WD is available only with a manual transmission, while fuel efficiency clocks in between 16.4 and 20.0 km/l. In more recent years, such as the 2011 model release, the Suzuki Wagon R comes powered by a 660 cc 53 hp naturally aspirated inline three-cylinder DOHC VVT engine, while the Wagon R Stingray gets a DOHC turbocharged engine. Fuel efficiency is estimated at 21.0 to 22.8 km/l, depending on the model variation. For the newer Suzuki Wagon Rs like the 2017 release, hybrid models are introduced to the lineup to make the Wagon R more efficient than ever with a stunning fuel consumption rate of up to 33.4 km/l.
