BMW 7 SERIES

The BMW 7 Series has long stood as BMW's flagship luxury sedan line. From its debut in the late 1970s, it has been the automotive symbol for cutting-edge technology, prestige, and comfort. Origin

The first BMW 7 Series was launched in 1977, succeeding BMW's "New Six" E3 sedans. It was intended to be BMW's high-end touring sedan, with top-tier comfort, advanced technology for its time (such as onboard computers), and smooth six-cylinder engines.

First Generation (E23; 1977–1985)

Released in 1977, the first BMW 7 Series was a full-size four-door sedan packed with advanced technologies for the era, including onboard computers, a service interval indicator, an anti-lock braking system, and double-link front suspension. Engines included naturally aspirated and turbocharged 2.5 to 3.5 L inline-six gasoline units, with some models—such as the 745i—using turbochargers for greater power.

Second Generation (E32; 1986–1993)

BMW introduced more luxury and power for the second generation. Xenon headlights appeared, along with dual-pane glass and optional extras like rear-seat amenities and built-in phones. The second generation added more luxury and power, offering 3.0 to 4.0 L V8 engines and a large 5.0 L V12, plus a new six-cylinder option.

Third Generation (E38; 1994–2000)

The E38 is often considered one of the best classic BMWs for its blend of performance, comfort, and reliability. It introduced safety upgrades such as side curtain airbags and head airbags, as well as convenience features like satellite navigation and a built-in television. Alongside 2.8 to 5.4 L gasoline engines, BMW offered turbodiesel 2.5 to 2.9 L inline-six and 3.9 L V8 units in the E38.

Fourth Generation (E65/E66/E67/E68; 2001–2007)

The fourth generation featured Chris Bangle's flame-surfacing exterior styling, departing from traditional BMW design. It was the first BMW to feature the iDrive infotainment system, active anti-roll bars, night vision, and an electronic smart key system. Engines for the fourth generation included a 6.0 L V12 gasoline engine and diesel units ranging from a 3.0 L inline-six to a 4.4 L V8, with turbocharging for added power.

Fifth Generation (F01/F02/F03/F04; 2008–2014)

Luxury and performance reached new heights in the fifth generation. The F01 was the first 7 Series to offer a hybrid drivetrain and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It was larger than the outgoing fourth generation, came with more powerful V8 engines, and set a benchmark for high-end sedan luxury.

Sixth Generation (G11/G12; 2015–2021)

BMW improved the 7 Series with the G11/G12, building it on the CLAR platform, which uses carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer, high-strength steel, and aluminum to reduce weight, increase structural rigidity, and improve ride quality. Many models featured advanced technologies such as Gesture Control, improved driver-assist systems (lane-keeping, blind spot warning, side collision mitigation, night vision systems), and more. Gasoline engines ranged from 2.0 to 6.6 L, many with twin turbocharging, while diesels included a 2.0 L inline-four turbo and 3.0 L inline-six turbo or quad-turbo units. The plug-in gasoline hybrid models used 2.0 L inline-four and 3.0 L inline-six turbo engines.

Seventh Generation (G70/G73; 2022–present)

The seventh-generation 7 Series introduced bold new styling with a wide, tall grille and high-mounted LED daytime running lights. It comes with high-tech interiors, large curved displays, advanced driver-assist packages, and many luxury features such as ambient lighting and upgraded sound systems. The lineup features gasoline mild hybrids powered by a 3.0 L turbo inline-six and a 4.4 L twin-turbo V8, a plug-in hybrid with a 3.0 L turbo inline-six, and a diesel mild hybrid with a 3.0 L turbo inline-six. The all-electric i7 model debuted with this generation, featuring dual electric motors producing 536 hp and a range of up to 482 km.

Engine Performance and Technology

The BMW 7 Series has always showcased the brand's latest powertrains and engineering. Each generation brought new engines and technologies that balanced performance and efficiency. From the fifth generation (2008 onward), turbocharging became standard for boosting power output. For example, the 4.4 L twin-turbo N63 V8 delivers up to 402 hp.

The seventh generation debuted the i7, a fully electric variant with dual motors, 536 hp, and a driving range up to 482 km.

Safety has always been part of the 7 Series DNA, and newer models raise the bar even higher.
