BMW Z4

BMW's Z4 is their classically-styled roadster and coupe that's built for style and performance. Launched in 2003 as the replacement to the Z3, the Z4 comes with all the features of classic convertibles, such as a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a low ride height. Across its generations, BMW has only improved the Z4 and made it even more of a crowd-pleaser by equipping it with more powerful drivetrains and emboldening its appearance while still retaining its traditional roadster DNA. Origin

The Z4 replaced the Z3 when it was released in 2003, and it also addressed many criticisms of the outgoing model. The new BMW roadster was larger and had a significantly stiffer chassis.

First Generation (E85; 2003–2008)

The first-generation E85 Z4 set the stage for what to expect from the model, featuring a long sweeping hood and long wheelbase reminiscent of traditional roadsters. Yet its appearance distinguished it as a complete modern vehicle, with its elegant curves that emphasised its vast body. Although it was initially released only as a roadster, the Z4 received a coupe body in 2006. Feature highlights included standard 17-inch wheels and tires, electric power steering, and a Dynamic Stability Control system with features such as Brake Fade Compensation, Brake Standby, Brake Drying, Start-off Assistant, and Modulated ABS function. For its engines, the E85 Z4 got 2.2 L to 3.2 L inline six-cylinders, and a 2.0 L inline four-cylinder petrol.

Second Generation (E89; 2009–2016)

The second-generation E89 Z4 was released in 2009, and it came with a wealth of updates inside and out. It retained the proportions of the first generation, but now with wider air intakes, dual round headlights, and tail lights that wrapped around the sides. In the interior, the steering wheel received shortcuts to the central stack, the instrument cluster got a binocular design, and the steering wheel, seats, and gear stick came wrapped in leather. From the second generation onwards, the Z4 no longer came with a soft top. It was available with just one body—a roadster with a retractable hardtop. Standard equipment for the E89 included regenerative braking and electric power steering that were part of the suite of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, as well as optional or market-specific features like an engine stop-start system, an electric parking brake, directional headlights, and a drive mode selector. Engines were a 2.0 L inline-four turbo, 2.5 L inline-six, 3.0 L inline-six, and 3.0 L inline-six twin turbo, all of which are petrol. In addition to the six-speed manual, six-speed automatic, and eight-speed automatic, there was a seven-speed Getrag dual-clutch transmission.

Third Generation (G29; 2018–present)

2018 saw the launch of the third-generation G29 Z4, which was designed alongside the fifth-generation Toyota Supra and shares the same platform. The G29 Z4 is shorter than the previous generation and received updates to its front, getting a front apron with a large air intake and a new honeycomb kidney grille. At the back, the rear taillights were slimmer and wrapped the car even more. The convertible soft top returns for the G29, replacing the retractable hard top. It comes with a 10.25-inch display with iDrive 7.0, and is available with driver assistance systems that include active cruise control, lane change warning system, a parking assistant, and collision warning with braking intervention. As expected, the steering wheel, seats, and gear stick come wrapped in leather. Powering the third-generation Z4 are a 2.0 L inline-four turbo or a 3.0 L inline-six turbo, both of which are mated to an eight-speed transmission. A six-speed manual is optional with the 2.0 L.

Engine Performance & Technology

BMW's Z4 engines deliver exceptional performance. While most car manufacturers have switched to a V6 layout for the six-cylinder engines, BMW continues to use the inline-six layout, which it cut its teeth on for the 3 Series. These inline six-cylinder engines produce greater torque at lower speeds, are quieter, and produce less vibration than V6 engines.

Some of the Z4's gasoline and diesel engines from 2011 onwards utilize BMW's TwinPower Turbo technology, which allows for more variability within the engine range, improves fuel consumption, and reduces emissions.

The M40i also receives visual and performance upgrades such as a hexagonal-patterned kidney grille and additional angular air intake with two side scoops that cool the front brakes and lower drag.
