BMW X1

Since 2009, the BMW X1 has been one of the brand's most popular entry points into its SUV lineup. Designed to combine the agility of a compact car with the practicality of a crossover, the X1 offers a mix of premium feel, efficient performance, and everyday usability. Although the first X1 had rear-wheel-drive versions and was considered a special type of SUV, it has since become a popular luxury small crossover with the newest technology. If you're looking for a sporty, premium compact crossover, consider getting a BMW X1. Read on to find out more.

Origin

The X1 was introduced in 2009 as the smallest member of BMW's "Sports Activity Vehicle" family. It sat below the larger X3 and X5 and was targeted at those who wanted BMW's signature handling in a more city-friendly package. Over time, the model adapted to market demand, trading some sporty character for more space and comfort and introducing advanced driver-assistance features.

First Generation (E84; 2009–2015)

The first-generation X1 E84 was launched in 2009 and was based on the E90 3 Series platform. It had classic BMW proportions, such as a long hood, short overhangs, and rear-wheel-drive dynamics. In many markets, it was offered with both sDrive (rear-wheel drive) and xDrive (all-wheel drive) layouts. The E84 was praised in particular for its excellent handling, accurate steering, and a balanced chassis. Its front seats came with a good amount of space, although its 420 L cargo space was modest compared to its rivals.

The E84 X1 came with a number of engines, including a 2.0 L four-cylinder gas engine and a 3.0 L six-cylinder gas engine. There were also turbo versions of these. For diesels, it had a 2.0 L four-cylinder engine with either one or two turbos.

Second Generation (F48/F49; 2016–2021)

The second generation marked a significant shift in direction for the X1 as BMW moved it to a front-wheel-drive-based UKL platform, shared with the MINI Countryman. This brought gains in practicality, interior space, and comfort. For starters, the X1 now featured a taller stance and a boxier rear for improved headroom and luggage capacity. The cabin design became more premium, with improved materials and a higher seating position for better visibility. Standard features on the second generation included 17-inch alloy wheels, a roof rack, an electrically operated tailgate, BMW's 6.5-inch iDrive system, cloth seats, and 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats.

For the second-generation X1, the engines included a 1.5 L three-cylinder turbo gas and a 2.0 L four-cylinder turbo gas. Diesel options were a 1.5 L three-cylinder turbo and a 2.0 L four-cylinder turbo. There was also a plug-in hybrid version that used a 1.5 L three-cylinder turbo gas engine and an electric motor.

Third Generation (U11/U12; 2022–present)

The current X1 builds on all of the previous generation's strengths, with a larger footprint, sharper styling, and even more advanced tech. It is offered with mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines in many markets, alongside the all-electric iX1 for zero-emissions driving. A significant change on the inside of the third-generation X1 is the curved display housing the digital instrument cluster and central touchscreen, running BMW's latest iDrive 8 software. Additionally, the material and build quality of the X1 have been elevated, and rear-seat space is among the best in the segment. Standard equipment on the third-generation X1 includes forward-collision warning, speed-limit info, and a rearview camera. Other advanced safety features, like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, are available in a different package.

The third-generation X1 gets its power from a 1.5 L turbo three-cylinder gas engine, a 2.0 L turbo four-cylinder mild-hybrid gas engine, and a 2.0 L turbo four-cylinder mild-hybrid diesel. There is also a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric version.

Engine Performance & Technology

Across all generations, the X1 has come powered by engines that combine efficiency with good performance to make daily driving a breeze. BMW's turbocharged engines, for instance, strike a good balance between performance and fuel economy. Some of the X1's engines feature BMW's TwinPower Turbo system, which is a design that uses a single turbo with a special twin-scroll design or two turbos to make sure the car gets power quickly and smoothly. Newer models of the X1 can also come with quick-shifting automatic transmissions with sport modes and paddle shifters.

Safety & Reliability

The X1 has consistently performed well in safety and reliability tests, such as the Euro NCAP and IIHS crash tests. It comes with a good range of standard safety equipment, such as stability and traction control, ABS with brake assist, an airbag array, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Newer versions of the X1 come standard with some advanced safety features like a rearview camera and Active Driving Assistant, which includes forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning. Other features, like blind-spot detection and adaptive LED headlights, are available as options.

Trim Configurations

The trims of the X1 vary by region and model year. Some standard trims are the Base/SE, which gets the essential features, cloth or basic leather, and smaller wheels; the Sport Line, which receives sportier exterior accents and upgraded seats; and the M Sport trim, which gives the X1 a sportier look with a more aggressive styling kit, firmer suspension, sport seats, and special trim. There is also the Luxury Line, which has chrome accents, high-quality leather, and more comfort-focused features. Optional packages are available that can bring along navigation upgrades, panoramic roofs, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, and enhanced safety systems.
