Origin
The 4-Series was first introduced as the coupe version of the 3-Series, evolving from the 3-Series' previous coupe and convertible variants. At its launch at the 2013 North American Auto Show in Detroit, the 4-Series bore a close resemblance to the 3-Series since they shared the same platform. However, it was a completely different car than the 3-Series--it was sportier and more practical than the 4-Series and much of the market competition.
First Generation (F32/F33/F36; 2013-2019)
The first generation 4-Series was released in 2013 and was lower and wider than the 4-Series and many of the other coupes and convertibles in the market. This low profile and wide body, combined with different performance and design features such as its swept-back headlights, large air intake, and additional vents, gave it an even sportier appearance and increased its performance. On the inside, the 4-Series was fitted with high-bolstered bucket seats and a 40:20:40 split row of back seats. There was also a good amount of storage space thanks to a large boot and foldable seats. BMW's XDrive AWD technology was also available.
Engines for the first generation were 1.5L inline three-cylinder, 2.0L inline four-cylinder, and 3.0L inline six-cylinder gasolines, and for diesels, a 2.0L inline four-cylinder and a 3.0L inline six-cylinder.
Second Generation (G22/G23/G26; 2020-present)
The second generation was designed as a completely new car from the previous one, and it was an initiative by BMW to position the 4-Series as an even more upmarket vehicle. The most significant design change was the 1930s BMW 328-inspired large kidney grille at the front, which received a facelift in 2024 to add on horizontal slats. Other changes included a pair of vents at the front bumper to cool the brakes and a dual exhaust at the rear. LEDs were standard for the headlights, while lasers were available as options.
On the inside, the 4-Series got standard sport-bucket seats and an instrument cluster featuring a TFT display with an infotainment system installed on the center stack. For its engines, the second generation 4-Series got 2.0L inline four-cylinder turbo petrol, 3.0L inline six-cylinder turbo mild-hybrid petrol, 2.0L inline four-cylinder turbo diesel, and 3.0L inline six-cylinder turbo diesel.
Engine Performance & Technology
